Mad Max Movie Revisited

If a person sinks into complete nihilism, and then another does the same, and so on and so forth, something terrible might happen like a domino effect where the world goes insane and subsequently loses all rationality and morality. This is the kind of effect that occurs in all Dystopian films and although the causes can be slightly varied, the crux of the matter has to do with perceived shortages (they're not necessarily real) and threats on personal freedoms.

mad3.pngThe easiest way to understand how to build a society that doesn't go the way of a Mad Max film which we'll discuss in a moment is to revisit the fairytale: "Three Little Pigs". The pig who builds his house from brick does the sensible thing, building with a strong material that will not be prone to falling when the Big Bad Wolf blows and blows and blows.

Today, our overall world is not built with a strong spiritual etheric material because it lacks the proper ethics that derive from societies where individual freedoms are not squashed by hidden powers within government and other organizations who are corrupt at heart, rotten to the core and are driven by the pursuit of money or honor or madness. Those things create systems made of weak material; like a house of cards, doomed to fall— indeed, to crash and burn. And therein is the perfect segue to the point of Mad Max—

a "crash and burn" movie that I don't recommend, but it serves as an example of how messed up we are as human beings to even watch something like this, let alone it be created in the first place. So why did I watch it recently? Because I study screenwriting as a hobby and I remembered the apocalyptic landscape that screams of where we're headed if we don't turn ourselves around as a whole and unified world.

This movie exhibits such a sad scenario. It's much worse than that. It's a twisted, sick, perverted, deplorable, vile, disgusting, hellish, evil, cruel, bloody, mentally insane movie that for whatever crazy reason, earned almost $100 million after the independent Australian B movie was distributed worldwide.

This post apocalyptic action movie that began in 1979 has a Spaghetti Western vibe to it and it's evident that "the gloss" of a production with a higher budget to expend doesn't exist here. It's raw and feels to me unfiltered. That in itself gives me the eebie-jeebies.

The main character is Max Rockatansky. He's a police officer played by Mel Gibson, living in a future of societal collapse due to critical resource shortages. The most striking feature of this movie to me is the stupidity of it all. It's all a bunch of vehicles racing towards nowhere and nothing in the Australian Outback. The music track is a bunch of engines revving. The Bad Guys are a crazed freakish group demonic human beings that live their life in order to torment and kill. If I were to paint the overall totality of this film in a few words, I'd say: A world of complete and total madness due to its moral decline, sinking ever further into hedonism and complete depravity.

Why even watch this?! Why was it created in the first place?! I keep asking myself this and when I did my research I found out some interesting nuggets of information.

Written by George Miller and Co-scripted by James McCausland, it had it's roots in an idea being formulated in George's mind as he dabbled in film making. George had actually been working as a doctor in Sydney and so he must have seen his share of trouble and perhaps gore. He also had noticed that many Australians had an obsession with automobiles: A whole culture had arisen of people perpetuating some kind of worship of metallic hell on wheels that caused them to use the Outback and abandoned roads as raceways. Speeding and manic fury that a "normal" person would see as a type of insanity. Perhaps the good doctor George had wanted to give testament to this very fact, proving in film, the futility and pointlessness of such activities. At least, that's what I want to believe as to why the movie was created.

With all the motors and explosions and damage for the sake of damage, I kept wondering: There's all that beautiful land off the roadway, if they would have just stopped all their stupid racing and killing and picked up a shovel and started to dig and plant, maybe something would grow. Maybe they could settle down, have a campfire or something, sing some songs, learn how to crochet or play chess or something.

Fast forward from the 1979 Mad Max movie to the Associated Press News dated Jan 7th 2021.

Chaos, Violence, Mockery as rioters occupy U.S. Capitol. Lawmakers, staff members, and more were hiding under tables, hunkered down in locked rooms, saying prayers, guns were drawn, a people killed or injured, windows broken, glass shattered, law makers threatened... It devolved into scenes of fear & agony and potentially leaving American Democracy in tatters.

The biggest thing that has me stumped, is why the President would say he would go with his supporters to The Capitol, and then not do just that. That doesn't show any real solidarity. I don't know what's going on, but there are people, via YouTube, expressing concerns that some of what's going on is being created and orchestrated (at least in part) by paid actors. Dressing up, waving whatever banner they care to wave and inciting a mob mentality. If you've got a lot of people out of work, it's reasonable to imagine they just might do that. Whatever and however the case may be, The World is currently manifesting a whole lot of evil due to a lack of moral decline and prevalence of secular societies around our precious Globe.

At this epoch in time, I will end with words from The Apostle Paul in his Epistle to the Ephesians.

Ephesians 6:10 – 6:12

Finally my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of His Might.

Put on the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.

For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this wicked world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

Hopefully in 2021 we can have the time to reflect on the things that really matter. Chances are that the things we thought were important, aren't that important after all and God, willing, we will not be forced to watch a bunch of idiots racing down our Highway 97 like the mental cases in Mad Max!
